Crime back down to normal after two burglars caught
Monday, 6th February 2012.
There was good news on the crime front in Haverhill this week as the statistics returned to normal after a three-week spate which saw houses, sheds, garages and cars burgled all over town.
Police had been concerned at the spike in the numbers of burglaries, but the town's police chief maintained it was probably only caused by one or two offenders.
Police arrested one man for aggravated burglary a week or so ago, and on Thursday magistrates put another in jail after a bizarre burglary which police dubbed one of the stupidest crimes they had encountered.
Since then there have been no house burglaries in the town and just one burglary of an outbuilding. That made last week's total one domestic burglary and three burglaries of other buildings which conforms to the town's normal average.
Haverhill's police chief, Insp Peter Ferrie, said: "I think we have dealt with the culprits, but we will be carrying on our extra patrols. Putting extra officers out has had a definite effect.
"Also, we still need information from the public about suspicious activity, and about who may have been committing burglaries in Haverhill."
He confirmed police were now carrying out random patrols in all areas of the town not just places targeted during the crime spree.
