Crackdown on High Street driving and parking
Wednesday, 16th December 2009.
Motorists who flout driving and parking regulations in Haverhill High Street face a crackdown from the police for the next month.
Haverhill Town Council and Haverhill town centre manager Tina Hanks have asked police enforce parking restrictions in High Street, and also the regulations which prevent people driving up High Street between 10am and 4pm.
The issue was raised at a recent town council meeting, and taken to Haverhill Police's Safer Neighbourhood Team.
As a result the police have agreed to make it one of their three priorities for the next month.
The other two are a long-term youth diversioning programme to prevent groups of youths gathering in High Street and resulting anti-social behaviour, and also disturbances caused by youths in the Allington Walk area of the Parkway estate.
The town council's particular concerns were about illegal parking near the Iceland store, and the town centre manager is to liaise with the store about a long-term solution.
Warnings will be issued to begin with, but after that the fixed penalties will be imposed.
Disabled drivers are urged to display their blue badges in their cars at all times to avoid confusion.
