Coxswain Stuart is life saver
By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 6th July 2000.
A Quick-thinking rescue boat coxswain has received a life saving honour for helping save a woman's life after a road accident.
Stuart Foreman, 24, from Steeple Bumpstead, near Haverhill, is a Hertfordshire Boat Rescue coxswain and was presented with the Certificate of Commendation by the Royal Life Saving Society.
It was for his courage in saving 20-year-old Annabel Harry, from Plymouth in 1998.
Mr Foreman and his partner Val were driving home along the A505, near Whittlesford, after visiting friends when they came across the accident.
He immediately climbed into the rear of the badly damaged Volkswagen Golf and supported the woman's head, allowing her to breathe.
Mr Foreman had to remain in this position for a further 30 minutes until the fire service could free Annabel from the wreckage.
She was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital, where she was treated in intensive care but has now made a full recovery.
Doreen Hedges, president of the Hertfordshire brach of the Royal Life Saving Society, presented the heroic coxswain with his award at a special ceremony.
"If it wasn't for Stuart's quick thinking, advanced first aid and bravery the young lady would have died," Mrs Hedges said.
