Countywide charity needs 300 volunteers
By Martin Chapman on Tuesday, 19th March 2002.
Across the county Age Concern Suffolk is aiming to recruit 300 new volunteers to work across their services.
Established in 1948 the charity works with and for senior citizens across the county, campaigning on their behalf and providing services directly/
The charity needs help, urgently, in charity shops, befriending schemes and in advice and advocacy services.
Within Haverhill the charity provides community transport. Volunteer drivers and escorts are fully trained and provide community transport across the town in a fully accessible minibus and people carrier.
Age Concern are also seeking volunteers from the retired community. Described as the fastest growing area of employment. The charity admits that after a career of paid work, “voluntary” may seem demeaning. But volunteering working is essential for community spirit and democracy.
According to Simon Moss, Volunteer Development Officer at the charity: “the main joy that is so different from previous work is that Age Concern Suffolk will not expect a 40 hour week, you only give what you can spare.
A volunteer from Age Concern Suffolk said: “I hoe that someone will do the same for me when I need it.”
