County speed clampdown catches 900 in a week

Monday, 10th May 2010.

More than 900 motorists were caught speeding in Suffolk during a week-long European speed enforcement campaign in the county between
Monday, April 26, and Sunday, May 2.

The campaign, lead by Tispol - the European Traffic Police Network, saw a countywide increase in checks and enforcement as officers clamped down on those driving at excessive speeds.

Motorists were warned of the campaign through publicity but 807 people were still caught by police officers and Suffolk Safety Camera
Partnership cameras and a further 140 were caught by fixed cameras in the county.

In a similar campaign in April last year 719 motorists were caught speeding.

Chief Insp Adrian Dawson, head of roads policing for Suffolk, said: “It is always disappointing that so many drivers have failed to listen to our warnings.”

“There is never an excuse for flouting the speed limit and drivers need to realise the impact driving at excessive speeds can have. Suffolk Police will continue to target issues of speed throughout the year”

“There were 42 people killed on Suffolk’s roads last year and the role speed plays in both fatal and serious road traffic collisions cannot be underestimated.

“During this campaign we have tried to educate those who speed through enforcement. It is a very simple message but a very important one – speed kills – and by targeting those who are speeding we hope we can save lives.”
