County grants aim to help build the Big Society
Monday, 22nd November 2010.
New grants are to be available for local voluntary groups who have ideas for improving their communities.
Suffolk County Council is teaming up with the Suffolk Foundation to offer new grants to voluntary and community groups with the launch of a Transforming Suffolk Fund.
The scheme has put money aside to help build and strengthen partnerships as well as engage the voluntary and community sector in planning long-term improvements for communities.
Organisations and groups can apply for funding towards new projects which help to address the needs of local communities, such as improved access to services, training and employment opportunities or better use of existing facilities.
Applicants are encouraged to come up with new ways to meet local needs by forming groups and partnerships which incorporate members of the community.
Two types of grant will be available through the Transforming Suffolk Fund: £5,000 from the Suffolk Foundation to support one-off individual local projects and £50,000 over a maximum of three years from Suffolk County Council to develop innovative projects in partnership with others. The total funding available is £2.5m over the three years of the scheme
Cllr Jane Storey, Suffolk County Council’s portfolio holder for resource management, said: “While we recognise the invaluable work which is already taking place to make communities better places to live and work, we want to help people to develop ideas which will enable them to build on this to become ‘each other’s solution'.
"We believe these grants will ensure we have stronger communities and an improved quality of life for everyone."
Celia Hodson, chief executive of Choose Suffolk, said" “The Transforming Suffolk Fund will provide a vital financial resource to support a wide range of innovative projects at a community level which will translate into local solutions on the ground.
"It is a real opportunity to develop sustainable projects tailored to grass roots needs, giving communities the assistance they need to develop services to help themselves.”
Stephen Singleton, chief executive of the Suffolk Foundation, said: “We are confident that these vibrant organisations will have an immense role to play in the months and years to come and that their importance has been recognised through this new grants programme."
