County Council to consult with parents on specialist education provision for children

Tuesday, 8th December 2015.

Suffolk County Council's Cabinet will discuss proposals for a consultation process to transform specialist provision for children and young people across the county when it meets today.

The proposal sets out the plan to consult parents, governors, teaching staff and trade unions in early 2016, to ask for ideas and views on how to potentially redesign the way in which existing provision for special support centres (SSCs) and other specialist settings for children are delivered in response to changes in local needs.

The council would like to develop a broader and more varied range of provision to ensure vulnerable learners are in a position to access the educational support they need, close to where they live. Currently over 250 Suffolk children are educated outside of the county due to the complexity of their needs and a lack of local provision.

Suffolk County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services & Education and Skills, Cllr Gordon Jones said: "Over the last few years we have looked to develop specialist education services that meet the needs of local children. We have engaged with parents and carers, specialist provision head teachers, partner agencies and local schools. The proposed consultation reflects the views expressed during our discussions up to this point. We need to address the provision for this type of support in Suffolk, to enable children to access services much closer to their home.

“The welfare and education of every child in Suffolk is the council’s number one priority and this proposal demonstrates our commitment to helping every child get the best start in life."

All partners and interested parties will be invited to express their views through this consultation. The results of the consultation will be reported back to Cabinet in late spring. The outcomes from the consultation process will inform the options for the future development of specialist education provision in Suffolk.
