Councils differ on system for assessing developments
Thursday, 16th August 2001.
A SYSTEM for deciding which should be considered for residential development has been agreed by borough councillors – but Haverhill Town Council believes it is weighted in favour of developers.
Members of St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s Planning Committee have agreed the methodology as part of their replacement Local Plan, due to be replaced by 2006.
It changes the way in which sites are assessed in an effort to make sure development is sustainable, taking account of transport and environmental implications.
Haverhill Town Council was one of the 20 to reply in the consultation about the new scheme.
Town Councillors felt that the scheme was weighted towards the developers because there was no opportunity for local communities to provide input as to whether or not sites should be considered for development.
He committee noted the observation but did not agree that the methodology was weighted towards the developers.
Sturmer Parish Council also responded, saying that the acceptance of truly-sustainable development principles would enable Haverhill and other settlements to expand by controlled, steady and necessary growth, which would benefit them and surrounding communities.
