Councillors object to new facilities in Tresco car park
Wednesday, 10th September 2014.
Town councillors have objected to plans by Tesco to install three new facilities in the car park for 'car-related' services.
These would include a car wash and a mini-Halfords quick-fitting service, and members heard from residents during the public forum that these services already existed in the town.
A total of 42 parking spaces would be lost to make way for the kiosks, along the back of Lordscroft Lane properties.
At last night's planning committee meeting of Haverhill Town Council, Cllr Roger Andre said they were far too close to residential properties and hours of operation were therefore unreasonable.
In principle he did not object and welcomed the new jobs the facilities would bring, but suggested they be located elsewhere on the site.
Cllr Pat Hanlon agreed and said the store owned a large area of derelict land on the si8te which could be used for this.
Cllr Betty McLatchy said it might create jobs there but it would be likely to cause jobs to be lost elsewhere in the town.
She said Tesco were trying to take over the town and all these businesses were covered elsewhere.
Residents also argued that Tesco should take responsibility for anti-social behaviour which was currently going on in their car park at night.
This included car racing and inappropriate behaviour of various kinds. Members agreed to write to Tesco and highlight the issue.
