Councillors cautious over galvanising plant
Wednesday, 8th January 2014.
Town councillors have asked for a detailed study of the dangers of a new galvanising plant proposed on Haverhill's industrial estate.
Acrow Galvanising, now part of the Wedge Group, is asking for permission to move its operations from Saffron Walden to Haverhill, planning a plant in Pipperell Way.
It represents a £4million investment in the town.
Although they would bring their staff with them, they say there would be the opportunity for more jobs in Haverhill.
Parking at the site would cater for 11 workers per shift plus nine office staff and two visitors a day.
Town mayor Cllr Roger Andre called for a COMAH assessment (Control of Major Accident Hazards) to be carried out, after details showed a variety of noxious chemicals neaded to be dealt with.
Members of the town council's planning committee asked for the assessment before St Edmundsbury Borough Council planners decide whether to approve the plans.
