Council wants to tell you about its big idea

Monday, 1st November 2010.

Suffolk County Council wants to talk to all of us about its new and radical idea to offload most of its activities onto the private or voluntary sectors to save money.

The council says it is engaging with individuals and organisations across Suffolk to work through the crisis that will be generated by public spending cuts and develop an understanding of the New Strategic Direction - the name it givesn to what others have dubbed 'the big sell-off'.

In support of this, a new document, The New Strategic Direction Explained, has been produced. This provides a more detailed explanation of why the council is moving towards this new way of working.

In order for people to express their views on the subject, an online survey has been launched. The feedback received will be used to report back to the council, at its meeting on December 2, and inform the next stage of engagement activity.

Chief executive of the Suffolk Association of Voluntary Organisations (SAVO), Jonathan Moore said: “It augurs very well that Suffolk County Council is willing to respond to concerns of voluntary groups and come up with positive opportunities to engage and contribute to what are ambitious plans. A two-way dialogue is essential and one I know that organisations are ready for.”

Shona Bendix, chief executive of Suffolk Association of Local Councils (SALC), said: “This is an important step towards proper engagement which we hope will be followed by a determined, focused and sophisticated conversation about the opportunities for services and assets to be transferred to town and parish councils so that communities can take rightful ownership.”

Cllr Jeremy Pembroke, leader of Suffolk County Council, supported the council’s latest steps to engage with the community.

"Meaningful engagement with people and organisations across Suffolk will be essential," he said, "as we take forward implementation of our New Strategic Direction. I very much welcome publication of the Strategy as an important step in the ongoing engagement process.”

The online survey and all documents relating to the New Strategic Direction are available on the council’s website: www.suffolk.gov.uk/newstrategicdirection
