Council up for national fleet mileage reduction award

Thursday, 23rd December 2010.

St Edmundsbury Borough Council has been short-listed to receive a national fleet hero award for business mileage management from the Energy Saving Trust.

Supported by the Guardian newspaper and the CBI, the awards promote and recognise innovation in the sustainable management of vehicle fleet operations.

The council’s fleet includes 27 cars, 47 light commercial and 28 heavy commercial vehicles.

Measures such as driver training, a seven-step best practice guide and redesigned refuse collection rounds have helped achieve the council commitment to sustainability which aimed for a ten per cent reduction in mileage by April 2010.

The council also has a ‘grey’ fleet of 150 staff cars. The submission also mentioned initiatives to increase the greener use of pool cars and to promote car sharing and lower emission vehicles, which has seen the number of sub 120g/km cars go up from mid 20s to a current 80-plus in two years.

Cllr Peter Stevens, the council's cabinet member for environment said: “This nomination clearly recognises the corporate leadership St Edmundsbury has taken in the responsible management of its fleet operations.

"We are addressing both commute and business mileage, overall environmental air quality and the health of staff. The building blocks for continuous improvement are in place.”

The winners will be announced at the beginning of February.
