Council to trial free parking after 3pm on Fridays
Friday, 15th March 2013.
Haverhill is to get some free car parking in an attempt to boost the town centre’s economy.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council, which runs the town’s car parks, is initiating a trial scheme from next month to allow free parking after 3pm on Fridays.
The ‘Free After Three’ scheme was launched today at Lower Downs Slade car park by Cllr Anne Gower, the borough’s member with responsibility for Haverhill.
It will start on April the 26th for a one-year trial period.
Cllr Anne Gower, St Edmundsbury Borough Council cabinet member with responsibility for Haverhill said: “From Friday, April 26, parking in all our car parks in Haverhill will be free after 3pm on Fridays.
"During the wide-ranging review of our car parks, we consulted town centre businesses about encouraging more people into town by offering a free parking period during the week.
"I am delighted to say that, having agreed the council’s budget, we will be going ahead with the scheme for a one year trial.”
Free car parking was available after 4pm on Fridays in the run-up to Christmas. Extending this year round and adding the extra hour is also aimed at allowing shoppers to catch the regular provisions market.
