Council takes 'green' award for recycling
Thursday, 21st October 1999.
A 'GREEN' council has won a top national award for its recycling scheme.
Coun John Wayman, chairman of St Edmundsbury Borough Council's Transport and Works Committee, received the award for the Best Recycling Targets Success Scheme at a conference held in Birmingham.
And Sandra Pell, the borough's recycling and waste management officer, was runner-up in the Recycling Officer of the Year award.
The award came during a busy week for the recycling and waste management team, who were also interviewed by a Department of the Environment panel after their application for "beacon" status was short-listed.
Coun Wayman said it was pleasing to receive an award judged by professionals in their field.
He said they had been encouraged by operational partners Suffolk Waste Disposal Company and Forest Heath District Council to enter the award contest.
"This award is an acknowledgement by the recycling industry itself that St Edmundsbury Borough Council provides the most effective and sustainable recycling service in the country," Coun Wayman said.
"This is a team award for the whole of the borough's recycling and waste management section."
