Council reveals plans to celebrate its 25th birthday
Wednesday, 30th April 2014.
This year's annual town meeting, on Tuesday, May 27, will be a special occasion to celebrate 25 years since Haverhill Town Council was formed.
The legal requirements of the annual meeting of the town council will be dealt with as swiftly as possible and then the town meeting will be open for any residents to raise issues they wish to.
But to launch it there will be some brief talks about the town council. The town's first mayor, Gerry Kiernan, will speak about how the town council came about, former town clerk Gordon Mussett will describe how it developed, recent ex-town clerk Will Austin will speak about his time here and the town mayor will comment on the council's current situation.
There will be refreshments and commemorative mugs to hand out, and the whole event is expected to cost around £1,000, acting town clerk Bob Whittome told members at last night's meeting.
Cllr Maureen Byrne said the council should spend a bit of money on the occasion. "A lot of people fought very hard for a town council and they are all volunteers," she said.
Town mayor, Cllr Roger Andre, said: "It represents 25 years of service by an awfully large number of people."
