Council ready for a fight over bus shelters
Wednesday, 28th October 2009.
A big battle is looming over the shelters at Haverhill's new bus station after Suffolk County Council indicated it is 'not minded to change them' despite massive protests from all sections of the town.
Haverhill Town Councillors were incensed by the county's attitude and last night (Tuesday) agreed to fire off a very strong letters to the county council's head of planning, and the county councillor who is responsible for transport issues.
Town mayor Elaine McManus said there had been 'a very heated debate' over the issue when the Haverhill Area Working Party met county representatives.
Cllr Maureen Byrne said she was very concerned at the county's attitude and town councillors needed to find a way of putting pressure on them.
Cllr McManus said everyone was agreed the county's stance was not good enough, and Cllr Anne Gower suggested writing a strongly-worded letter to the senior officer and the councillor involved.
"We should say we are not prepared to accept this and that we want the shelters taken away and replaced with something better."
Cllr Byrne also suggested they invite the individuals to their next meeting, which was also agreed.
