Council leads the way on the trail of faster broadband
Wednesday, 25th May 2011.
Suffolk County Council is leading the campaign to secure better broadband for the county.
The council's cabinet yesterday agreed to give their full backing to the Better Broadband For Suffolk campaign and to invest £439,000 in the programme over the next four years.
Cllr Mark Bee, leader of the Conservative group on the council, and Suffolk MPs have come together with business organisations, local authorities and others in a partnership chaired by Andy Wood, chair of the New Anglia LEP, to spearhead the initiative.
Suffolk currently has one of the poorest broadband coverages in England. The average broadband speed currently experienced by Suffolk’s consumers and small businesses is under 5Mbps.
This lack of good broadband coverage in the county has created a major constraint on business growth and a block on public service transformation.
The Government has made available a fund of £530m to support the provision of fast broadband across the country and Suffolk has submitted a bid for £20m.
Cllr Bee said: “I am delighted that the cabinet has decided to give its full support to the Better Broadband For Suffolk campaign.
“Improvements to broadband in the county are completely essential. The difference this will make to public services, local businesses and to households throughout the county will be incredible.
“It is important that we work together with MPs, business and other partners to make this happen.”
