Council leader thanks all who helped during the freeze

Tuesday, 19th January 2010.

The leader of Suffolk County Council has publicly thanked staff, volunteers and partner organisations for their extraordinary efforts during the recent bout of severe weather.

The council said the response from everyone who came forward to help, including all those who went out of their way to check on elderly neighbours, had been overwhelming and just went to prove how amazing Suffolk people were, especially during difficult times.

Cllr Jeremy Pembroke said: “I really want to take this opportunity to thank everyone, particularly those on the front line and those that support the front line, for the wonderful job they have all done during this very cold spell, whether it be the gritting teams who have kept our roads open and our county running, whether it be all those who have made unscheduled visits to our customers, to ensure that they are well and safe, irrespective of whether they were at home or in residential care.

"There will be others who have gone that extra mile to ensure our services have been delivered. To everyone, please accept my heartfelt thanks on behalf of all elected members.”

There have been many heartwarming stories from across the whole county of care staff who have worked tirelessly despite the weather, to ensure the most vulnerable people in our communities have been getting the vital support they need.

Martin Stevens, one of the council's operations and partnerships managers also reported that a number of visits could only be made with the help of Suffolk Rover Rescue or family and friends with 4x4s taking carers to and from the houses of vulnerable people.

He said: “We would want to express a big thank you to both these groups and say how pleased we have been to see the way the council and private home care agencies and voluntary agencies have worked together to ensure a large number of vulnerable people remained safely at home during the bad weather.”

The council's teams of gritters also deserved a special note of thanks, having worked around the clock during the worst of the bad weather to keep the traffic moving. Since December 17, when the first lot of snow arrived, crews have gritted 101,272 miles of road across the county.
