Council cash will help cricket club to get a second ground
Wednesday, 26th November 2014.
Haverhill Cricket Club's aims to create a second cricket ground to cater for its increasing membership were given a boost by Haverhill Town Councillors last night when they agreed to contribute £8,400 towards the project.
The club has been trying to find land for a second ground for some years, but has now been offered a field in Calford Green, Kedington, and wants to push ahead with the scheme.
Its commercial officer Greg Street told members the growth and success of the club over the last seven years had been exceptional.
But because they only had one ground, some of their member were having to play at Babraham, Halstead and Thaxted, and they had no opportunity to set up girls' and women's cricket in which there was interest locally.
The club has already raised £25,000 through various events. It tried to be self-funding but was in need of a little help with this project. It was not a wealthy club but it tried to keep membership affordable for all.
Cllr Maureen Byrne inquired about access to the field which was in the process of negotiation. She asked this should have been secured, along with a guarantee of the new use of the field, before any grant was made.
On that basis members agreed to give the grant.
Cllr Paul Firman asked if the council could afford to give the grant and was told the money was available. The council had also recently agreed funding for Haverhill Gymnastics Club.
Cllr Betty McLatchey said they had given a lot of grants towards football and it was nice to be able to help cricket as well.
