Council asks for help to flag up the town
Monday, 21st January 2013.
Work is already under way on Haverhill's promised flag festival for the coming summer.
After the overwhelmingly positive response to the display in the town centre last summer when flags were put up to celebrate the Jubilee and the Olympics, Haverhill Town Council is working with Haverhill-based The Design Office to create the Haverhill Flag Festival for summer 2013.
The Haverhill 2012 flags developed by The Design Office were so popular the town council had members of the public clamouring for them when they were taken down after the summer.
The Flag Festival organisers for this year want to get inspiration for the seasonal designs from the residents of Haverhill and are inviting people to submit pictures and images or take part in a special event in February half-term.
Four designs for flags depicting representations of the four seasons will be created, each incorporating the CB9 logo. These will bedeck the high street and the market square. There will also be bunting along High Street and Queen Street.
There are two ways in which you can get involved. On Monday, February 18, at Haverhill Arts Centre between 10am and 4pm, there will be a drop-in workshop where you will have the chance to develop your own seasonal flag designs assisted by artists.
All materials will be supplied and the drop-in is open to all ages. All children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
Alternatively, you can create your own designs and e-mail your design(s) to flags@cb9haverhill.co.uk.
Town clerk Will Austin said: "Town councillors are keen to build on the spirit of their 2012 project. Haverhill’s display was commented upon by visitors from near and far and attracted a good deal of media attention, helping to promote the town.
"Our aim this year is to repeat that success, with the addition of residents' involvement in the design, giving the project a real sense of community ownership.
"With the help of the town we are fast becoming the flag capital of Europe!"
Rebecca Bacon from The Design Office said: "We are delighted that the special edition logo we developed for Haverhill 2012 was such a success.
"We are looking forward to getting ideas from the wider community to produce more flag designs that are unique to Haverhill."
Project manager Nick Keeble said: "We hope to raise the Spring flag up the St Mary’s flagpole in April 2013.
"The other designs will be displayed in the town centre from the first day of summer and throughout the summer holidays. More exciting activities are being planned as part of the Haverhill Festival in June."
