Copying celebrity trekkers without stepping outside leisure centre
Wednesday, 16th March 2011.
Staff and members of Haverhill Leisure Centre are to trek the 100km (62 miles) that celebrities completed in five days during the Comic Relief Desert Trek - but in just one day.
Celebrities including Lorraine Kelly, Dermot O'Leary and Scott Mills completed a five-day trek across the Kaisut Desert, in north Kenya, in February for Comic Relief.
But unlike the TV stars who covered 100km while battling desert heat, stubborn donkeys and painful blisters, staff and members will not have to leave the Leisure Centre.
They will be completing the challenge on treadmills and cross trainers in the gym from 6am to 10pm to raise money for Comic Relief on Red Nose Day, Friday, March 18.
The marathon trek will be completed by staff and members who each contribute as many miles as they can throughout the day until they reach the 100km total, raising hundreds of pounds for the charity.
Fitness manager Matt Hickey said: “Unlike Dermot O'Leary and Scott Mills we will not be battling the heat of the Kenyan desert but it is still quite a distance to go on treadmills and cross trainers.
"Our members are a generous bunch and they like a new challenge which is for a very good cause.”
