Monday, 29th September 2003.
MUSICIANS from around the world visited Haverhill on Saturday for the 14th annual Haverhill Sinfonia Soloist Competition.
What began as a modest competition is now a prestigious international event, which this year set a new record by attracting 163 entrants of 33 nationalities.
Twenty-five musicians were chosen to compete and travelled to Haverhill to perform a 20-minute programme of their own choice in a day of musical delights of the highest calibre. Categories featured are strings, keyboard, percussion, woodwind, brass and voice.
The winner was Yurie Miura from Japan, playing piano. She won prizes to the value of £2,700 and 11 opportunities to perform with other musicians including Haverhill Sinfonia, the City of Rochester Symphony Orchestra, Hertfordshire Philharmonia, Orchestra of the Swan and The Cambridge Orchestra plus solo recitals in Colchester, Glasgow, Louth, and Skegness.
