Conditions play big part in first angling club match
By Rupert Beynon on Monday, 12th April 2010.
Last Sunday saw the first Haverhill Angling Club match of the season at Hermitage lakes in Clare.
The previous day had seen the highest temperatures of the year, so when a cold north-east wind was blowing across the lake when we arrived it would have an effect on the rest of the day.
It was decided to have a walk-off after the draw, which meant that, whoever drew, no one had the choice of swim on the lake.
Jason Jeggo chose the swim next to the car park due to a medical problem and Dave Spencer chose a corner of the lake which was sheltered from the wind which would prove a good choice at the weigh-in.
Early into the match Dave Reece was into a large carp which broke the top section of his pole, which otherwise would have put him in the running, but no other carp showed in his swim.
At the end of the match only Dave Spencer had any other carp, taking three on the method using peperami, with a winning total of 20lb 5oz.
Second with all small silver fish was Shaun Griggs using maggot on the pole, with 14lb, and third was Jason Jeggo with 9lb using a straight lead with maggot.
Haverhill Angling Club are now able to fish Clare top lake after it had been closed for the past two years, but members must have a club card which must be shown to bailiffs on demand - cards available at Petco, under Sturmer Arches.
The next match will take place on Sunday, April 25, at Crabtree lake, Lawn Farm, names who wish to fish to Jason please.
