Concern raised on trees

By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 27th May 1999.

REASSURANCES have been given that trees at Haverhill have been cut back to preserve them and avoid cutting them down.
At Haverhill Town Council's annual meeting, concerns were raised about the tree at the front of the former Cangle School and a row of poplars in Western Avenue, which have been cut back.
David Carmichael, St Edmundsbury Borough Council's tree officer, said the poplars in Western Avenue had been pollarded, but would grow back quite quickly.
Poplars have quite soft wood and where the trees had been cut back about 15 years ago, the wood had begun to rot and the new branches were considered dangerous and could have fallen on to Western Avenue or the Mountpleasant Club car park.
"We had them climbed and they were pollarded on the advice of a tree surgeon below the point of weakness," said Mr Carmichael.
"We could have taken them out altogether, but we felt they were very distinctive and it would spoil the view. They look a bit stark the moment, but in the end they will look better."
Pete Husbands, manager of the Cangle Foyer housing and training centre, which is due to open in July, said the tree there had been unstable and they were faced with the choice of pollarding or removing it.
It was hoped the tree would grow back and no longer be a danger to anyone entering the building.
