Community celebrated as school harvest helps foodbank
Monday, 8th October 2012.
Harvest gifts, collected by parents, pupils and staff were piled high for donation to Haverhill Foodbank at the recent harvest celebration at Burton End Community Primary School.
Pupils, parents, carers and staff have been collecting their donations over recent weeks.
Pupils were reminded of a billion people worldwide who go to bed hungry. They joined the school choir in a lively samba harvest song and heard of harvest customs all over the world.
Headteacher Fay Trussler said: ”The celebration of harvest is an important event in the rhythm of the rural community. Supporting the Haverhill Foodbank by our donation is an important reminder to our pupils of the value of community engagement.”
Chairman of governors, Grahame Hepworth, said: “Together with other schools in our partnership with Castle Manor Academy we are prominent in the development of the next generation of adults in our community.
"Promoting the benefits of sharing and an appreciation of the needs of others are integral components of our ethos. Our pupils learn to appreciate the connections between environment and food supplies and to recognise their good fortune in having sufficient for their needs.”
Deputy town mayor Cllr Andre, who attended, said: “Our young people, in Haverhill, are amazing. The Haverhill Foodbank is also amazing – when the two come together it is awesome! There has never been a greater call on the services provided by REACH, particularly the Foodbank.
"The pupils at Burton End have shown by their donations the extent of their generosity. While we celebrate the gifts from God at the harvest festival, we also celebrate the commitment and strength of our community.”
