Coach helps kick off Christmas
Wednesday, 29th November 2000.
TOWN mayor and keen Cambridge United supporter Gerry Kiernan got a treat when the team's player coach, John Taylor, helped him switch on Haverhill's Christmas lights.
Mr Taylor, who is also the team's highest goal scorer, also brought along giant team mascot Marvin the Moose for the event at the Market Square.
Nick Keeble, Haverhill Town Council's leisure worker, said Coun Kiernan was not amused when he tried to get an Ipswich Town player along for the event. It was hoped John Taylor's visit would attract football fans and others along.
New lights outside the Arts Centre were lit up at the same time as those in the Market Square.
There was also free children's entertainment including clowns and fire jugglers, provided by Haverhill Town Council and St Edmundsbury Borough Council.
