Club to boost town
By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 14th October 1999.
THE new nightclub due to open in Haverhill tonight could prove a big boost to the town's economy, say pub landlords.
Rush Nightclub will open at 9.30pm, after a £300,000 renovation of the former Co-op building in the town centre, catering for up to 820 people.
It will open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays until 2am, with no-alcohol Under 18s nights on Tuesdays.
Staff at the Rose and Crown Hotel in Withersfield Road, which runs regular disco nights, welcomed the arrival of the club.
Ian Mitchell, assistant Manager, said far from taking away trade, the club would help to keep people in the town.
"They will go on until 2am and we close at 11pm. Hopefully people going out in the town will come here first, then go on to the club," said Mr Mitchell.
"At the moment a lot of people go out of town to clubs in Newmarket, Bury and Cambridge, you see coachloads going on.
"Now they won't have to because we have got a club here in the town. We can only hold so many and at times we are absolutely packed solid. In the summer between the bar and the car park we probably have about 500 at peak times on a Saturday night.
"Our trade has gone up dramatically over the last couple of years and I cannot see this taking any away - hopefully it will go up even more."
The White Hart pub in the High Street is seeking planning permission for an extension. Joanne Kennedy, assistant manager, also welcomed Rush.
"I think it will probably stop people going out of town to nightclubs and they will possibly go in the pubs first," she said.
"I think it will do the town a lot of good."
Jason West, manager of the Woolpack, said their discos were usually packed solid and could only accommodate about 150 youngsters.
"The view of most people is that if it does not actually boost trade it won't actually take it away. I think it will help keep people in the town, but we will just have to wait and see," said Mr West.
