Club must do more to get grant for its festival
Wednesday, 2nd February 2011.
A Haverhill club is to be called before the town council to explain why it needs a grant of £2,000 for an event which won't take place until 2013.
Haverhill Flower Club had applied to the town council for a grant of £2,000 for a flower festival to be held in St Mary's Church in 2013 to mark the club's 50th anniversary.
But members meeting last night thought the club needed to show more effort at fund raising itself.
Cllr Margaret Marks said: "They should do more to raise funds. They don't even charge admission at the events they hold in the Arts Centre. This is a lot of money and perhaps we should look at some sort of matched funding."
Cllr Anne Gower said she agreed and the club should be asked to attend a council meeting and explain the detail of what the money was needed for.
Cllr Maureen Byrne said: "They are asking two years in advance, so they would have two years to raise half the money if we look at match funding.
"I think we have to be really careful now and even £1,000 is a lot of money in the current climate."
