Classical Music at The Apex

It’s not every day that you see an orchestra perform a complete symphony from memory; no music, no stands and no chairs either, but in Mozart by Memory – The Musical Memory Palace on 4 February, Aurora Orchestra is going to do just that, with Mozart’s ‘Symphony No. 40’. The orchestra will be joined by Ed Cooke, a Grand Memory Master who will help improve memory retention with his imaginative and often downright hilarious 'memory palace’ techniques. He will invite the audience to astonish themselves with the power of their own memories as he illuminates the genius and drama of Mozart's writing. Aurora performed to great acclaim at both the 2014 and 2015 BBC Proms. Come and see why performers and audience members alike found this thrilling new way of engaging with symphonic music to be so exciting and refreshing.
One of the UK's leading oboists, Nicholas Daniel founded the Britten Oboe Quartet with his colleagues and co-principals of the award-winning Britten Sinfonia. The quartet will record their debut CD at The Apex, before appearing in a sublime concert of works by Mozart and Britten on 28 January.
Led by gifted composer and formidable pianist virtuoso, Robert John Godfrey, The Enid are the only band to have successfully fused progressive rock-based music with the power, dynamics and scale of classical music. In their 2015 album 'The Bridge', The Enid explored the classical elements of their music in more detail, with orchestral and choral arrangements accompanied by symphonic guitar textures. The Enid bring their ambitious new audio-visual production, 'Dust' to The Apex on 5 February.
The Academy of St Martin in the Fields is one of the world’s premier chamber orchestras. Alongside popular works by Bach, Britten, Elgar and Tchaikovsky, their concert on 17 February will include a new piece by one of the key figures of British contemporary classical music, John Woolrich, which will have received its world premiere in London just the day before. Four Academy principal soloists will showcase the exceptional ability of the musicians who make up the Academy.
The Academy of Ancient Music brings a beautiful programme of Bach, Vivaldi and Telemann to The Apex on 15 April. Composers such as Bach and Telemann were challenged and delighted by Vivaldi’s new concertos, whose flamboyance and playful exuberance constituted a truly innovative, new sound. Directing from the harpsichord, Richard Egarr explores the cross-continental connections of this incredibly fruitful age of classical music embracing the violin, recorder, oboe, horn and trumpet.
Spring 2016 also sees visits by some excellent amateur groups, along with their special guests: East Anglia Chamber Orchestra with the Cann twins (6 February), Wolsey Orchestra and Clare Presland (13 February), St Edmundsbury Male Voice Choir with special guest Laura Wright (20 February) and Bury St Edmunds Friendly Orchestra with Liliana Luongo (28 February). Bury Bach Choir sing Cherubini Requiem on 12 March and Prometheus Orchestra are joined by John Paul Ekins on 17 April.
