Civic service raises funds for town organisations

The Mayor’s Civic Service was held at Haverhill Methodist Church in Camps Road ont Sunday, followed by tea in the church hall.
The service, which aims to celebrate public service within Haverhill, helped raise funds for Haverhill St John Ambulance, the Air Training Corps 1451 Squadron and the Haverhill Scout’s and Guide’s Headquarters Fund.
Town mayor Cllr Roger Andre, who attended with his wife Pauline, said: "It’s great so many distinguished guests could join us from across the county and neighbouring counties. We are proud to celebrate service to our community by so many and to see so many young people participate."
The service was conducted by the Rev Nigel Bishop, minister of Haverhill Methodist Church.
Haverhill St John Ambulance offer first aid training and have a growing cadet unit offering opportunities to serve the community at events and activities. Cadets are trained by volunteers in essential first aid skills and develop leadership skills. Cadets train weekly at their HQ in Burton End.
Haverhill 1451 Squadron, Air Training Corps provide two training nights each week at their HQ in Withersfield Road. Young men and women benefit from development as individuals and as leaders.
Haverhill Scouts and Guides are raising funds to replace their much used, and much loved, headquarters buildings at their Scout and Guide Centre to provide a modern, sustainable meeting hall for their numerous groups of young people aged from six and up.
With waiting lists to join and varied programmes of training activities for all ages the scouts and guides provide several meetings each week, and numerous trips and excursions.
