Chimswell selected for new waste reduction scheme
Monday, 15th November 2010.
Haverhill is to be at the forefront of a community initiative to reduce waste.
The Chimswell estate area is one of only eight places in the whole county to be chosen to spearhead the fight against waste, with residents, schools and businesses all being actively involved.
Borough residents are among the best recyclers in the country but the challenge of avoiding unnecessary waste remains, for example from excess packaging and over-buying.
The Streets Ahead project, organised by The Suffolk Waste Partnership (made up of the county, district and borough councils) is sending help from door to door, signing people up to reducing their overall waste.
Cllr Peter Stevens, St Edmundsbury Borough Council cabinet member for the environment said:
“We know the public are frustrated by unnecessary packaging and this great initiative gives them an opportunity to think about ways to avoid waste.
"Residents, schools and businesses in each community will be working towards a common aim. I am confident West Suffolk will do very well.”
Cllr Roy Barker, spokesman for the Suffolk Waste Partnership said: “Suffolk residents are currently recycling and composting around half of their waste, putting us amongst the best performers in the country.
"We now need to work towards reducing our waste to make us even better. The scheme will be taking shape over the next few months; businesses and residents in the chosen areas will receive advice and be encouraged to take pledges to easily reduce their waste in the longer term.”
