Children design new road signs

Wednesday, 5th May 2004.

Children from three schools in town have taken part in a competition to design school signs for Chimswell Way and Chivers Road and learnt a valuable lesson in road safety at the same time.

The competition part of a traffic calming scheme by St Edmundsbury Borough and Suffolk County Council, was to encourage motorists to drive slower through Chimswell Way and Chivers Road, which many children use to walk to school.

The children from Burton End County, St Felix RC Aided Primary Schools and Castle Hill Middle School were asked to design a simple road sign to warn motorists to slow down as they are in a built-up area where children may be crossing.

The competition was judged by representatives from each school, including school governors and local councillors. The four winning designs from each school have now been made into road signs that will be erected along Chimswell Way and Chivers Road.

Prize giving assemblies will be held at each school and the four winners from Burton End School will be receiving their prizes at the final of these assemblies on Wednesday.

A local borough councillor will be saying a few words about road safety at the assembly and will present prizes of book tokens and certificates to the winners. Runners-up will also receive a certificate and small prizes in recognition of their effort.
