Chance to tell the council how to aid recovery

Wednesday, 20th January 2010.

The council is seeking people's views about how to shape and promote the economy of St Edmundsbury during the hoped-for recovery from recession.

Consultation is about to begin on a draft economic action plan and St Edmundsbury Council would like feedback from all sections of the community, including businesses, by March 21.

The council carried out a survey of local businesses last autumn and has used the results to inform an economic assessment describing the current economic state of St Edmundsbury.

The assessment shows that, although businesses are finding the current economic conditions very hard, St Edmundsbury has not been hit as badly by the recession as many places.

Any recovery is likely to be fragile, and the economic action plan sets out the steps the council can take to plan for the recovery and create an environment within which local businesses can flourish.

Many of these steps are ones that local businesses themselves identified in the business survey.

They include improving public sector procurement opportunities for businesses, simplifying business support, identifying target sectors, lobbying for improved transport links and encouraging the development of skills locally that are needed by local employers.

Both the action plan and the assessment can be viewed on the council’s website at http://www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk/sebc/work/econassess.cfm.

Cllr Nigel Aitkens, St Edmundsbury's cabinet member for economy, said: "We want to make sure that we as a council help shape the future development of this area and respond effectively to the recession so that St Edmundsbury continues to be a prosperous place with a high quality of life. This action plan sets out the practical steps we can take to achieve these aims."

Responses should be sent in by Monday, March 21,
by email to economic.development@stedsbc.gov.uk by telephone to 01284 757683, or by post to St Edmundsbury Borough Council, West Suffolk House, Western Way, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk IP33 3YU
