Chance to celebrate our local heroes

Thursday, 20th September 2012.

A new campaign has been launched to unearth hidden talents and find local heroes in Suffolk.

The Be A Local Hero campaign is being launched by Suffolk County Council as part of a national programme to encourage local people to play a bigger part in their local community.

Being a local hero can range from standing as a local councillor, volunteering at a local charity or becoming a school governor.

Cllr Colin Spence began his time as a councillor when he was 26 and is passionate about helping his local community. He has continued his work and is now Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member responsible for public protection and the cabinet’s link to the voluntary and community sector.

Cllr Spence said: “The Be A Local Hero campaign is an excellent way for people to become more involved with their local community. There are so many ways for people to make a positive impact, and it can be on their terms.

"The contribution made doesn’t need to be full time - just a few hours a week can really make a difference.”
