Chance for volunteers to help at Olympics

A volunteering events team is to be established in Suffolk in response to the massive interest created for volunteering by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The team, which will launch in September, is part of a Suffolk-wide campaign to benefit sport and culture in the county by capitalising on the inspiration created for volunteering by the Games.
The news marks the start of the two-year countdown to the Games and comes as London 2012 organisers launch the biggest volunteer recruitment drive since World War II to recruit up to 70,000 people to help with the Games.
Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG said: “London 2012 needs brilliant volunteers to help us deliver a great Olympic and Paralympic Games. Our volunteers will be called ‘Games Makers’ to reflect the important role they will play in staging the 2012 Games.
"I urge anyone that is interested to come to our website to find out everything they need to know about volunteering in 2012.”
As well as introducing new volunteers to the sport and cultural sector in the county the Suffolk 2012 Volunteering Legacy Project also aims to increase the number of volunteering opportunities available within Suffolk as well as encourage as many people from Suffolk as possible to become Games time volunteers.
Cllr Rosemary Clarke, Suffolk County Council’s portfolio holder for sport, culture, diversity, health and wellbeing, said “Our aim is to use the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to create a meaningful and lasting volunteering legacy for Suffolk and we are delighted to be working with Suffolk Volunteering Federation, Young Suffolk and Suffolk Sport to achieve this.
"Volunteers play a huge part in the sporting and cultural life of our wonderful county and I am sure that the Suffolk 2012 Volunteering Legacy Project will have a positive impact on this hugely important area.”
