Chairman hints at new signings

Thursday, 19th October 2000.

PAUL Goodman needed this Saturday's league clash at third-placed Dereham Town like a hole in the head.
The Haverhill Rovers boss, whose side have picked up just one league point so far this season, are rooted in the bottom five.
Chairman Terry McGerty is sure the manager will turn things around - but the players must rebuild confidence and more importantly find their goalscoring boots.
"It's just not going in for us at the moment," McGerty said.
We are playing a lot better than the results suggest. I am really confident it will come right."
And the chairman hinted that new signings could be made to boost Goodman's squad.
"Any squad always needs strengthening. However, the potential is there, it is just a case of bringing it out," said McGerty.
"This game is all about confidence. The confidence is not there. We only need a couple of wins under our belt and it changes everything."
Goodman refused to blame his strikers for the lack of goals. "We are not giving them enough service. We will work on these things in training; it will come together eventually."
The Rovers boss has a full-strength squad from which to choose against Dereham, who could go topif they win and the results go their way.
Things took a turn for the worse for Haverhill last Saturday when Goodman's charges were dumped out of the Suffolk Senior Cup with a 2-0 home defeat to Border League champions Sudbury reserves.
Sudbury, a strong side because of the amalgamation between Sudbury Town and Sudbury Wanderers, went in front after 22 minutes of this Suffolk derby.
To add insult to injury the visitors doubled their lead when Rovers centre-half James Fitzpatrick headed into his own goal on the hour, effectively killing the tie.
Haverhill were thankful to keeper David Dickinson late on after he produced a wonderful save to prevent Sudbury taking an undeserved 3-0 lead.
The hosts' best chance fell to Mark Brandt, who shot wide during the second half. Although enjoying the Lion's share of possession. Rovers simply did not create enough chances.
