CCTV to target street drinkers
By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 15th July 1999.
MORE CCTV cameras and a pub watch scheme are among new measures planned to help make Haverhill safer.
CCTV could be installed in the Cangle Junction and Withersfield Road area of the town , members of Haverhill Partnership Group were told by Insp John Fletcher, the town's sector commander.
Concerns were raised at the meeting about large numbers of young people congregating outside pubs in the area and drinking on the street, particularly with the Cangle Junction housing centre due to open soon.
Mr. Fletcher said a lot of criminal damage occurred in the area and he felt another camera would help overcome this.
He did not feel the opening of Cangle Junction would affect the situation.
Mr. Fletcher added that a pub watch scheme was about to be launched in Haverhill with all licensees agreeing to bar troublemakers.
Members of the partnership group agreed to invite the town's pub landlords along to one of their future meetings.
Mr. Fletcher also told the meeting that burglaries of homes were down by a third and theft of vehicles down by a half, compared to last year.
Violent crime and disorder had decreased, but damage had increased slightly, he said.
An increasing number of anti-crime measures were being put into action by the partnership he added.
