Castle Manor pupil earns United deal
Thursday, 15th March 2001.
A YOUNG footballer is hoping to kick off a promising career after signing for Cambridge United.
Michael Shinn, 16, who lives at Kedington, is a pupil at Castle Manor Upper School in Haverhill, where he commands the midfield in the school team.
He has just completed a very successful season with Cambridge United's under-17 team and has been offered a three-year scholarship with the club.
Only a few other players at the club have received the same offer.
Michael started playing with Ipswich Town Football Club when he was still at Parkway Middle School in Haverhill. He had a season with Cambridge City before transferring to the U's last year.
Michael has managed to balance a busy school schedule with the demands of playing both for his clubs and the West Suffolk area.
Michael, who lives at Westward Deals, Kedington, started playing for Haverhill United when he was eight and has never looked back.
He plays in central midfield and averaged between 50 and 60 goals a season in his younger days.
He went to Ipswich Town between the ages of nine and 12 but was released and went on to play for Newmarket Gunners.
He then played for Cambridge City and has spent the last season with Cambridge United.
Michael will take his GCSEs in June, then move to digs in Cambridge, but he will continue studying as well as playing football and hopes to take
A-Levels.
"At the moment I go over on Tuesday and Thursday to train and play on Saturdays. Now I have to live in digs for three years," he said.
"I will be playing for the youth team and hopefully the first team after that.
"I support Tottenham but I am happy where I am. This season I've been watching Cambridge United and Paul Wanless is my favourite player.
"It is going to be a lot of hard work but I am really looking forward to it it is all I have ever wanted to do."
