Cash available for potential sports stars

Monday, 17th December 2012.

If you know someone who could be the next Jessica Ennis or Mo Farah, Havebury wants to hear from you.

Haverhill's biggest housing provider, in partnership with Abbeycroft Leisure, is looking for applications from the members of its 6,000 households for its new Sporting Potential Scheme.

There is a pot of £3,000 available to help as many individuals as it can with costs of their training including travel costs, gym membership, equipment or new kit.

Havebury’s resident involvement adviser Ellie Darling said: “We were all so enthralled by the fantastic achievements of the athletes at the Olympics and Paralympics this summer.

"They are such an inspiration to us all and it’s so important that the legacy of their Games continues for future generations in St Edmundsbury.

"Havebury wants to support young people who have shown they have potential in any sport, however this scheme is not just about funding, it is about providing a support package to maximise individuals potential.

"Abbeycroft Leisure has a number of Sporting Ambassadors who can provide advice and support to our successful applicants and we are looking forward to helping some young people tap into their full potential."

Michelle Banfield-Curran, Abbeycroft’s partnership manager, said: “We are delighted to support Havebury’s Sporting Potential Scheme. The London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics was an amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience for all who competed and watched.

"We know from Abbeycroft’s sporting ambassadors that the training needed to compete at regional, national and international level can put huge pressure on finances at home at a time when athletes need to be focusing on their sport.

"This scheme offers the opportunity for people to who may be a future sporting star to fulfil their potential.”

Individuals can apply themselves or be put forward by someone else, perhaps by a friend, coach or family member.

Recipients must live in one of Havebury’s homes, be aged 18 or under, represent any sporting discipline and be at any stage in their sporting career. The successful applicants will be chosen by a panel made up of Havebury officials, tenants and representatives from Abbeycroft.

To make an application for money from the Sporting Potential Scheme, complete and submit the entry form at www.havebury.com or call Ellie Darling on 0300 3300 900.

Entries should be received by Friday, January 11, 2013 and the winner will be announced on Friday, February 1.
