Careless public still having items stolen from cars and vans

Tuesday, 30th August 2011.

Carelessness by the public is leading to more and more thefts from motor vehicles in Haverhill as police struggle to get across the message about protecting your property.

Throughout the summer there has been a series of thefts from cars and vans and people are still leaving their vehicles unlocked and valuables on display inside them.

The latest incidents show a new method. instaed of smashing a side window and stealing the satnav or radio, the thieves are now jemmy-ing open a door and bending it back.

Targeted valuables include handbags and wallets as well as the traditional satnavs or power tools.

PC Rupert Beynon of Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team had a stark message for motorists to put their cars in garages if at all possible and at least to make sure they are locked and valuable items are not left visible.

He said police also want the public to help in reporting any occasions when they are offered cheap goods or anything that might be stolen.

Another tack is to persuade people to mark up their property with UV marker pens, to include postcode and house number, so at least if property is stolen it can be reunited later with its owner when it is recovered.

The thefts - over a dozen in the last couple of weeks - generally take place in the early hours of the morning and are happening all over the town and to vehicles in all sorts of locations - driveways, car parks, on the road or anywhere accessible.
