Camera bid to cover loss of toilet attendant

Tuesday, 16th February 2010.

Town councillors meeting this evening are being asked to fund a CCTV camera to cover the corner of Recreation Ground near the toilets.

The need has come about because St Edmundsbury Borough Council is axing the permanent attendant at the toilets in a bid to save up to £35,000 a year.

In a report to this evening's Haverhill Town Council meeting, town clerk Gordon Mussett says it is not suggested the town council should contribute to prevent this happening.

But a recent survey showed the facilities were highly valued by residents and there is now concern that they could be misused if there is no attendant on site, and this might result in them being closed.

The provision of a CCTV camera linked to the area control room, at a cost of £12,000, is the suggested alternative, which would reduce any misuse.

St Edmundsbury Council has said it would be prepared to take over any ongoing costs for operating the camera.

The area has in the past been a centre for youths gathering and resulting anti-social behaviour some evenings, which was partly cured by the provision of bright lighting.
