Call for town Remembrance to be held in the morning
Thursday, 26th September 2013.
A councillor has called for Haverhill's annual Remembrance Service to be re-scheduled to the morning to bring it in line with the rest of the country.
Cllr Maureen Byrne told fellow members of Haverhill Town Council this week that many people wanted to have the service at 11am, and not have to wait until the afternoon for the St Edmundsbury mayor and the town's MP to be able to attend.
"A lot of people think it is disrespectful that we don't have the service at 11am," she said. "Why should we have to wait for the afternoon when most of the country does it in the morning?
"Only the MP and the Bury mayor would be missing. We have our own town mayor."
She urged consultation with the local Royal British Legion, members of which she believed shared her view.
Town clerk Will Austin said the act of remembrance was organised by St Edmundsbury Borough Council, so it was unlikely they would be prepared to change it.
