Business people told how to use their time better
Wednesday, 23rd January 2013.
Thebestof Haverhill welcomed guest speaker John Porter from Business Improvements Ltd to another lively meeting at Days Inn Haverhill last week.
Despite the inclement weather there was an excellent turnout for the event which was the first of 2013.
The topic was Work/Life Balance and was a change from the usual focus on Haverhill and the issues affecting the town.
Elaine Carr, owner of thebestof Haverhill, said: “I thought January would be an appropriate time to have a motivational speaker.
"It’s always good to have some focus at the start of a new year and I think as business owners we need all the help we can get to make life easier!
"John certainly gave us some food for thought on the issue of work/life balance. His use of humour really does get the message across. I received a lot of positive feedback about the session.”
John has run Business Improvement, specialising in business coaching and training, since 1984. During that time he has worked with over 20,000 people and has gained a huge insight into how people perform and what prevents them from achieving and enjoying their work and their life.
During the session John recounted how many of us set off to work each morning all fired up and ready to change the world.
By the time we arrive, have a coffee and read through our emails it’s 11am and there isn’t enough time left to change the world today so we put it off until tomorrow! We drift in a sea of re-activity.
The secret to managing our time more effectively and to attaining work/life balance was to move away from re-active tasks, which were usually dictated by others, to focus on proactive tasks – those important activities which would move us closer to our goals.
John emphasised the importance of writing a To Do list every day. He recommended that the list should be written before leaving work for the day rather than first thing in the morning as this would clear the mind and contribute towards a more relaxed evening.
Another tip was to set daily objectives which would help to give clarity, focus and purpose to what we do.
Achievement and enjoyment are the key drivers to attaining work/life balance. John said: “There is nothing worse than being at work all day coming home in the evening and not knowing what you have achieved during the day.
"We are all driven by the need to achieve. Of course the levels of achievement we aspire to are all different but the common factor is we need to experience that feeling of getting something done, it makes us feel our day has been worthwhile and that we can value ourselves.
Enjoying what you do is so important. If you have lost your passion and sparkle for your business how on earth can you expect to enthuse other people to do business with you? If you don’t enjoy what you do, it’s time to move on!”
