Business people get backing to run new-look Haverhill Show
Wednesday, 8th May 2013.
A new-look Haverhill Show will take place on July 21, after the town council has backed a group of town business people to run it.
A campaign led by local photographern David Doughty to put on an all-new Show for Haverhill received the support of Haverhill Town Council last week.
Mr Doughty, who has a photographic business in the town and has run the baby show for the last seven years, has been joined by other local business owners, including florist Fiona Pilcher, David and Jane Ellis of Ellis Interiors, Debby Strowger of Tony Strowger Jewellery and Mick Tokley from The Mortgage Centre among others.
The group has already got backing on Facebook and face to face from members of the public.
Mr Doughty said: “I have been completely overwhelmed by the support we’ve received, and by the number of local businesses who want to be involved.
"We don’t have a lot of time left to organise the Show but with all the offers of help it looks like being a brilliant day.”
The Recreation Ground has been booked for Sunday, July 21, for the event with further details to be announced over the next few weeks.
The town council has agreed to provide support to make sure that the event goes ahead this year, to give David and his group time to set up a properly constituted and financially transparent committee for future years.
Chair of its leisure committee, Cllr Gary Stroud, said: “The town council is keen to ensure that this event is run safely and effectively.
"We will also make sure that monies are properly accounted for. We have experience in putting on large events and also can provide resources and infrastructure.
"That said, organising another event in an already busy calendar would not be possible so in 2013 we will look to combine the Big Bash with the new Show.
"Both events are being organised for the same reason – to enable local charities and organisations to raise funds.
"We want people to have fun at what looks like being a really exciting event, and to provide local businesses with the support they need to take on the event in full from next year."
Town clerk Will Austin said: “We are delighted that businesses in the town have come forward to put on this event.
"It is important for the community of Haverhill that businesses play a part in promoting the town, and in assisting voluntary and community organisations.
"We are up against the clock to get the show sorted for July so will be looking to make the best use of local talent to provide the entertainment and local organisations and traders to show the very best that Haverhill has to offer.”
Any local voluntary organisation wishing to have a fund raising stall at the events should contact Vicky Ward on 01440 712858 or e-mail vicky.ward@haverhill-tc.gov.uk
Any local group/individual who can provide an arena display or some form of entertainment should contact Vicky Ward on 01440 712858 or e-mail vicky.ward@haverhill-tc.gov.uk
Any traders/retailers or businesses interested in having a trade stand or even being on the event steering group should contact David Doughty on 01440 712333 or email david@daviddoughty.co.uk
The short timescale means that Mr Doughty’s organising committee needs to get on with preparing for the event.
In the meantime there will be regular updates at town council meetings, including details of the charities that will benefit from the event.
