Burton Centre opened as first outreach centre of St Nicholas Hospice
Monday, 2nd June 2014.
Townspeople crowded to the Burton Centre on Saturday morning for the official opening of its new function as the home of the first outreach centre of St Nicholas Hospice.
The refurbished centre was opened by a Haverhill patient of St Nicholas, Denies Griffin, along with town mayor Cllr Roger Andre.
The £500,000 project has been two years in the planning and will see many of the hospice's services provided on the doorstep of Haverhill people, saving them the tedious round trip to Bury St Edmunds.
It will replicate work done in Bury in outpatients and daycare.
The building was owned by Suffolk County Council and has been gifted to the hospice.
Cllr Andre said: "Everyone I meet in Haverhill has had support or help of some kind from St Nicholas."
The town was very gratyeful to be chosen for the hospice's first outreach centre, he said. "It is wonderful to see this building restored to its former glory."
Before cutting the ribbon, Denise Griffin said Bury was 20 miles each way and the new centre was fantastic for her and all Haverhill people.
"In this Haverhill is not the 'poor relation' we always are," she said. "This time we are the first."
The centre includes the Haven Cafe and she urged everyone to use it as much as possible as the money raised all went into the work of St Nicholas Hospice.
The building was open for visitors to look around and see its new facilities, including a community room, the cafe area and four specially designed care rooms upstairs.
