Burglar is sent to jail after being on the run

Thursday, 31st January 2002.

A former Haverhill man has been jailed for more than two years after being on the run for nearly as long.

However, house burglar Andrew Darville was not far away but was living an apparently respectable and law abiding life in Essex.

Defence barrister Mike Magee said Darville had moved into lodgings in Essex with a woman with whom he had since formed a relationship.

Ipswich Crown Court heard how Darville should have appeared at the court for sentence in April 2000 following a conviction for a house burglary.

At that time, he was also in breach and community service order.

Last Friday, Darville was jailed for two years and four months.

Judge Durr, prosecuting said the burglary had happened at a house in Elmswell, near Bury St Edmunds, on February 27, 2000.

The owners had spent the evening at their local pub.

When they returned their four-bedroomed house in School Road, a quantity of jewellery and other items had been stolen.

Fingerprint evidence had pointed to Darville and he eventually admitted the offence.

Darville, formerly of Mill Hill, Haverhill, jumped bail before he was sentenced and was finally tracked down in December last year.
