Brothers jailed on consecutive days
Tuesday, 4th June 2013.
A former Haverhill Town Councillor today had his second son sent to prison in two days.
After one of Mick Graham’s sons was jailed for 30 months at Ipswich Crown Court yesterday for causing death by dangerous driving, another was arrested for attacking the judge.
Judge John Devaux had just jailed Philip Graham, of Quendon Place, Haverhill, when his brother Paul ran from the public gallery into the area where the judge was seated, and started wrestling with him and shouting.
Police officers, who had been in court for the sentencing hearing, and court staff rushed to the judge’s helpaid and restrained him.
He was later arrested for contempt of court and was brought back into court before Judge Devaux yesterday afternoon.
Judge Devaux, who was unharmed in the incident, and described as ‘cool as a cucumber throughout’, said it was not appropriate for him to deal with the matter and adjourned the case until today, when Graham will appear before Ipswich Crown Court resident judge David Goodin.
Today Paul was sentenced to 18 months in jail by Judge Goodin.
Philip Graham had earlier been convicted of the driving charge and was in court for sentence. He was driving along the B1054 last July to catch a train at Audley End when he hit a motorcycle ridden by 37-year-old Derek Foster, who was on his way to work in Haverhill.
Mr Foster, a father-of-two, died after suffering multiple injuries.
The brothers' father Mick was a member of Haverhill Town Council for several years, and stood in the recent Suffolk County Council elections on an Independent ticket.
He had been a member of the Haverhill Representative Alliance (HRA) which took control of the town council in 2003, but the group subsequently crumbled.
