Brothers get go-ahead for new fitness centre
By Rachael Doeg on Thursday, 10th May 2001.
FITNESS fanatics in Haverhill will soon be working up a sweat in a new health and fitness centre in the town.
Planning permission has been granted by St Edmundsbury Borough Council's Planning Committee to change the use of existing offices at Prospect House, Hollands Road, to provide a health and fitness club.
The application was submitted by brothers James and Bruce Goddard, and the business partners said work was expected to start soon on the health club.
"We're very excited about opening a new gym in Haverhill and we think there's a need for one," Bruce Goddard said.
"Haverhill is an up and coming town and the location is ideal for the club, with lots of parking and space outside.
"If everything goes according to plan, it should be open in a few months' time."
The club, which will be called Wilbur's, will be the brothers' second gym.
The first Wilbur's fitness club was opened in Saffron Walden nine years ago.
The centre will offer a fully-equipped gym with a cardiovascular room and exercise classes including pilates and the latest trend, spinning, in which static bikes are used.
There will also be a sauna and sunbeds.
Four full-time and six part-time jobs will be created at the centre.
Pre-opening discounts will be available for anyone interested in becoming a member.
Mr Goddard said: "We like to get to know our members and we build up a special programme of work for them according to what they want."
The planning application was approved late last week, with permission subject to the provision of cycle parking and the outdoor area being landscaped.
