Boys targeted in libraries' summer reading challenge
Tuesday, 26th July 2011.
Children living in Suffolk are set for a summer of discovery with the launch of this year’s reading challenge, Circus Stars.
The reading challenge is a national initiative which encourages children to keep up with their reading over the summer.
Children read six library books of their choice, collecting rewards and incentives along the way including bookmarks, stickers and “Chatterbox” fortune tellers.
In the past the challenge has been particularly popular with girls, so to entice more boys to complete the challenge some limited edition Top Trumps cards are up for grabs.
The cards have been created by Guy Bass, who won a Blue Peter Book Award for Dinkin Dings and the Frightening Things in 2010.
Cllr Judy Terry, Suffolk County Council's portfolio holder for greenest county, libraries, economy and skills, said: “The summer reading challenge is a great way of encouraging children to keep up with their reading over the summer holiday.
"Last year nearly 4,000 Suffolk children completed the Space Hop Challenge and this year our target is even higher.”
Every child who completes the challenge will be presented with a medal and certificate at a ceremony in their local library in September.
Keen readers who want to take up the challenge can register at their local library.
