Booking in for library's birthday
Thursday, 25th May 2000.
It was party time at Havrehill Library as staff and customers celebrated the 10th anniversary of the building.
A jazz band struck up for an hour and a coffee morning was held with all customers offered free tea or coffee. Suffolk's director of libraries and heritage, Amanda Arrowsmith, joined newly appointed library manager Madeline Tuck at the celebration.
Mrs Tuck has worked at Haverhill Library for 20 years, half in the new building and half in its predecessor, a temporary building at Lower Downs Slade that was used for 30 years.
"we has a lovely day, lots of people came and were very pleased to have a free cup of tea or coffee. The old building was only supposed to be temporary and was well past its sell-by date.
" The water used to come through the ceiling when it rained, "Mrs Tuck said.
The new library and adjoining Burton Centre for community use was built on the site of the former Burton Cottage youth centre, which was destroyed by fire. It now offers several computer terminals for public use and a complete range of videos, CDs and tapes, as well as books.
